A God Among Men

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Herb Ritts was one of the most iconic photographers of the 1990s. Utilizing clean lines and strong forms, his black and white photos (often reminiscent of Grecian gods) are sensual and passionate. Ritts also strived to redefine race and gender roles in his gallery work. Shooting everyone from Madonna to Johnny Depp to His Holiness the Dali Lama. Ritts was often seen on the pages of Vogue, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone and shooting ad campaigns for Chanel, Valentino, Versace among others. Sadly, the world lost a true talent when Mr. Ritts passed away on December 26th, 2002. His legacy lives on with his work as well as his influential work with numerous HIV/AIDS charities.

These series of costumes were designed by Amsterdam based artist Cocky Eek. She likes to develop works in a culture of play, experimenting with diverse sets of lightweight spacial compositions, in which the control over the process and outcome are often uncertain. Eek descries her work to be a physical experience that often gives the suggestions of flying, floating, or brain-silence and likes to stretch the physical borders of human possibilities.

“You should go bankrupt for what you love; for art, for fashion, for everything.”- Terence Koh

The black drums and black light were part of his show called  “These Decades that We Never Sleep” which are made of (and tagged as): “crystal chandelier, paint, lollipops, vegetable matter, human and horse hair, mineral oil, rope from a ship found after midnight, glass shards, stones and artist’s blood and shit.”……Mister Koh, an artist with no limits and nothing to hide.

Vamp, Jones and Haring!

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

‘ Vamp ‘ the he 80’s Horror Movie  is a colorful piece for those into surreal characters, strippers bearing breast and the superhuman Grace Jones, body- painted by  fascinating artist Keith Haring.

When at first I saw this movie, I could not believe my eyes. It was like entering another spectrum. It jaunted my focus on art and the sense of performance art. It was something that pushed the boundaries above and beyond it’s time and still resignates… I come back to the Haring body painting as it was so genius! And of course just to have a moment to reflect on the strength of Grace’s beauty and deliverance avec la perruque rouge (with red wig)… It takes you to a time of artistry where the boundaries were dismayed, and the expression was reverent.
