Look: Protectors by Slobodon Zivic and Hedvik Jenning

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Hedvik Jenning and Slobodan Zivic recently completed The Protector Series, curated by Jonas Kleerup. This collaboration takes the strength of both participants and marries them in a way that brings out the best in both. Zivic, the Swedish graphic designer once half of design duo Dizel&Sate, has long collaborated with others but these pieces seem to have a bit of a different tone. These images are considerably less influenced by Zivic’s usual street art and Bauhaus japanime and more defined by Rushka-esqe shapes. The Protector series captures a depth in subjects he described as “Observant, cooperative, informative and attentive. They are greatly concerned with the security of others and they often find assisting the downtrodden or people with disabilities to be satisfying. Protectors are comfortable working alone and they are often uncomfortable being in positions of authority. They often dislike situations where the rules are constantly changing. The Protector series is available for purchase at Restaurant Tranan- Karlbergsvägen 14, 113 27 Stockholm, Sweden.

Breaking Designer: Anti Sweden

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Northern Europe has a special mystery – it seems to be equal parts dark and light in the most compelling of ways. Take the Svalbard global seed vault for example. Carved into a mountain of permafrost on the island of Spitsbergen, the globale frøhvelv stores duplicates of all seed genes in the event of some great tragedy. Preserving tiny life against impending doom seems to also sum up the Norwegian brand Anti Sweden. This dynamic company offers a friendly challange to their neighbors to the East. Acknowledging Sweden’s ability to dominate the voice of Northern European fashion via brands like Acne and Cheap Monday, Anti Sweden has thrown down the gauntlet and decided to take a stand for Western Nordic fashion.

Anders Petersen

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Swedish photographer Anders Petersen has made a super successful career of taking black and white pictures of the drunken, sad-faced, pockmarked, villainous and batshit. When you look at one of Petersen’s gin-soaked, Thorazine-dosed photos you feel like “So THAT’S what Tom Waits is always howling about.” Gritty gorgeous. — Marlo Kronberg
